Barricades, riots, advancing troops: How events unfolded 20 years ago
The Gazette, July 10, 2010
March 11, 1990 Mohawks erected barricades at Kanesatake after the town of Oka started making plans to build an extension of the local golf course on the Pines.
July 11 An early morning raid by the SQ turned disastrous when Cpl. Marcel Lemay was killed. Mohawks at Kahnawake retaliated by blocking the Mercier Bridge, which would be closed for eight weeks.
Aug. 8 Prime Minister Brian Mulroney appointed Alan B. Gold, chief justice of the Quebec Superior Court as mediator. When riots erupted in Chateauguay, Premier Robert Bourassa called on the army who begin a slow advance on Mohawk barricades.
Sept. 26 The standoff ended when the last Mohawks left their encampment at the Kanesatake treatment centre.
